Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials（开发代号 Breckenridge）是面向小型企业的 Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 版本，主要用于轻量级的网络附加存储解决方案。它于 2010 年 11 月 8 日首次公布，[1]并于 2011 年 3 月 31 日进入发布到制造阶段。[2]此操作系统随后于同年 4 月正式向公众发布。
它的组件基于 Windows Small Business Server 2011 的 Essentials SKU。随着 Windows Server 2012 的发布，Windows Storage Server 产品系列及其功能均被合并到主流 Windows Server 操作系统家族中。
开发
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials 最初打算作为 Windows Home Server 2011 的一个独立版本，当时后者分为两个许可层级：
- Standard（
ServerHomeStandard） - Premium（
ServerHomePremium）
后者版本最终成为 Home Server 操作系统的最终发布版本，而前者版本在开发后期由于未知原因被重新以 Windows Storage Server 的名称发布。
