Windows 10 的开发过程中引入了一种称为 Windows 即服务的新发布模型，其中包含较小的常规功能更新，而不是每隔几年发布一次 Windows 的主要版本。通常，这些更新是操作系统的新版本，尽管在少数情况下 Microsoft 发布的功能更新是包含使用定期累积更新基础结构的一组有限的新功能。从 2017 年到 2021 年，功能更新在一年内发布两次，第一次功能更新在 4 月至 5 月发布，另一次在 10 月至 11 月发布。此时间表在 2021 年进行了重新调整， Windows 10 的功能更新改为每年发布一次，与 Windows 11 的新版本节奏保持一致。
