Windows Media Center 是一种数字录像机和媒体播放器应用程序，于 2002 年随着 Windows XP Media Center Edition 的发布而首次推出。它后来包含在 Windows Vista 的 Home Premium 和 Ultimate SKU 版本中，后来包含在 Windows 7 除简易版（Starter）和家庭普通版（Home Basic）外的所有 SKU 版本中。[a]此应用后来作为 Windows 8 和 Windows 8.1 的可选付费升级提供。此应用最终被弃用，后来随着 Windows 10 的发布而被删除，尽管它可以非正式地安装在 Windows 10 上。
历史
Windows XP（2002）
Windows Media Center 最初计划作为已取消的 Neptune 和 Windows Me 操作系统 Activity Centers（活动中心）的继任者。最早的 Windows XP Media Center Edition 版本包含此界面的接近最终版本的变体，以及其原始的工作标题 Windows Remote View。关于初始 Media Center Edition 版本的规划或总体开发情况，目前知之甚少。
Media Center 附带的作系统代号为“Freestyle”。它在 2002 年作为 Windows XP Media Center Edition 发布，仅以英文发布。Windows Media Center 仅适用于 HP、Gateway、Sony 等品牌。
Longhorn
最初在 Windows Longhorn 的代码库上继续开发，Windows Longhorn 是 Microsoft 为 Windows XP 的继任者而开发的项目。需要通过“添加/删除程序”控制面板小程序（APPWIZ.CPL）手动安装 Media Center 组件。由于在 Build 4001 中引入了 WIM 安装方法，因此无法再安装这些组件，因此开发在 2002 年 12 月又转移到 Windows XP Media Center Edition 的代码库。
Windows XP（2004、2005）
2003 年，Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 发布，对 Media Center 用户界面进行了设计大修，并支持 Media Center Extender（代号为 BobSled）。这是第一个在国际上提供的版本，支持广泛的本地化，这与以前的版本不同，以前的版本仅针对北美、法国、德国和日本市场进行本地化和发布。它还引入了对欧洲本地化的广播图文电视的支持，并与版本 2002 相比更好地利用了宽屏。
2004 年，Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 发布，再次对 Media Center 进行了 UI 更改，包括将默认字体从 Trebuchet MS 切换到 Segoe UI，使其成为首个发布使用 Segoe 字体系列的 Windows 版本。此版本还引入了对 HDTV 的支持。
Windows CE
Windows Media Center 的精简版，称为 Portable Media Center，在 2000 年代中期可用于 Windows CE。OEM 可以从 Microsoft 获得软件许可，以将其作为其 Windows CE 驱动系统的默认用户界面。
Portable Media Center 后来被用作 Zune 系列媒体播放器用户界面的基础，该系列媒体播放器本身也运行 Windows CE。
Windows Vista
在 Longhorn 开发重置后，开发于 2005 年转移到 Windows Vista 代码库。Media Center 的首个版本是 Build 5212，它引入了与 Windows 7 版本的程序类似的界面。随着开发的进行，Windows Media Center 的外观发生了巨大变化，Build 5270 中更新了品牌和 UI 元素，并在 Build 5310 中重新设计了音乐和窗口控件。在之后的版本中，通过新的启动动画和更新的声音进一步完善 UI。
Windows 7
在 Windows 7 的早期版本中，Windows Media Center 看起来与其 Vista 版本相同。但是，更高版本的用户界面又进行了细微的修改，其中包含新的启动动画和声音。最终的声音是在 Build 7051 中实现的。
弃用和移除
在 Windows 7 于 2009 年发布后，Microsoft 停止了对 Windows Media Center 的积极开发，在 Windows 8/8.1 中，默认情况下不再与消费者版本捆绑在一起，在 Windows 8/8.1 中正式弃用。后来开发了基于 Pro 的单独变体，在其中仍包含 Windows Media Center 应用，并在 2015 年 10 月 30 日之前通过向 Windows 8 添加功能服务和 Windows 8 功能包网站作为这些版本的补充付费附加组件提供。[1]因此，此应用在 Windows 7 和 Windows 8 之间不会有太大变化。
2015 年 5 月，Microsoft 宣布，由于使用率下降，Windows Media Center 将不再可用于 Windows 10；[2][3]此应用（及其相应的 SKU）最终在 Build 10147 中被搁置并删除。因此，从具有 Windows Media Center 的先前版本的 Windows 升级到 Windows 10 的用户将失去对此应用的访问权限，且（在现已过期的限时优惠中）免费获得付费的 Windows DVD Player，而不是要求支付 14.99 美元。[4]
2020 年 1 月，随着对 Windows 7 的免费支持结束，Microsoft 停止了在所有版本的 Windows Media Center 上对电子节目指南服务的支持。[5]
