Windows Server 2012 build 8140 is a build of Windows Server 2012, the free compile of which was uploaded to BetaArchive on 24 February 2020, along with its client counterpart. The debug compile of this build was later uploaded on 23 May 2022.

Changes

  • This build changes the default Start screen items, so only Metro Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and Desktop are left.
  • Internet Explorer is no longer pinned on the taskbar by default.
  • The taskbar text color in the Windows Basic theme has been changed to white.
  • This build now refers to itself as "Windows Server 8 Beta", replacing the previous branding seen in earlier builds.
  • The user interface in Server Core SKUs now runs in 1024x768 resolution instead of 800x600.
  • This is the first build to have Windows Alarm Notification.wav, Windows Call Notification.wav and Windows Default Notification.wav sounds that would be used in the Windows Server 2012 build 8250, since Windows 8 build 8107 (fbl_dnt2_dcon1).
  • This is the first build to introducing the Windows Proximity Connection.wav sound, since Windows 8 build 8123; However, it's a placeholder and obviously recorded by an amateur, most probably a Microsoft employee, by shouting the word "Proximity" gently close to the recorder, it would be used until the build 8150 before being changed to the one being reminiscent of the one found in the RTM.
