自 Windows XP SP1 以来的更改

  • 添加了安全中心，增强了 Windows 防火墙。
  • OOBE 添加一个用于自动更新的新页面。
  • 所有版本的启动屏幕都已统一。最值得注意的是，它不再显示 SKU，且 Home Edition 的启动屏幕现在使用蓝色进度条。
  • 添加了本机蓝牙支持。
  • 改进了无线网络。
  • 远程桌面连接更新到版本 5.1.2600.1154。
  • Windows Media Player 更新到版本 9。
  • .NET Framework 更新到版本 1.1 SP1。
  • 如果出现错误检查，系统现在会在转储物理内存后自动重启（如果已设置）。这可以在系统属性的“高级”>“启动和恢复”中永久禁用，也可以在启动期间在“高级启动选项”中选择专用选项时暂时禁用。
  • 设备管理器控制台能够在设备属性的“详细信息”选项卡中显示供应商和设备 ID。
  • Internet Explorer 6 更新到 SV1 版本（又名 IE 6 SP2），含脚本和弹出窗口阻止程序。
  • 如果处理器支持 PAE， such as the Pentium II,则会在“系统属性”的处理器规格下方添加一行“Physical Address Extension”。

修订

后来发布了 Service Pack 2 的两个修订版：

  • Service Pack 2b（随后是服务器对应的 Service Pack 2a）于 2006 年 8 月发布，纳入在 Internet Explorer 中手动激活 ActiveX 控件的要求，规避 Eolas 专利（最终于 2012 年失效）。Microsoft 后来在 2007 年 11 月从 Eolas 获得了专利许可，并于 2008 年 4 月（在 Service Pack 3 发布之前）发布了一个补丁来恢复这一变化。
  • Service Pack 2c 于 2007 年 9 月发布，扩展 Professional 的可用 OEM 产品密钥的数量。
