Windows 8 build 8171 is a pre-Consumer Preview/Beta build of Windows 8. A screenshot of this build was uploaded on 27 October 2024. It was shared the next day.
New features and changes
User interface
The PC settings application received its final design iteration, making it look visually identical to the variant found within the RTM build. Its application icon would also receive the finalized design seen in later builds of Windows 8. The Internet Explorer and Windows Store application tiles in the Start screen now utilize vibrant blue colors.
A majority of the wallpapers used in the official Consumer Preview build (except for the default and Theme2 wallpapers) have been added to the existing wallpaper set.
Branding
The "Windows 8 Beta" branding last seen on Windows 8 build 8143 has been brought back, replacing most references to "Windows Developer Preview" in places such as the watermark, System Properties, and the winver banner.
Setup
The metro setup has been updated to replace all references to "Windows Developer Preview" to Windows 8 Beta". This build also updates the metro-styled setup with a dark teal accent similar to the one seen in the Preinstallation Environment.
File Explorer
This is the earliest known build to load the navigation (back, forward and menu) button resources from the active theme's msstyles, rather than from ExplorerFrame.dll. This build also removes the "shadow" effect formerly present behind these buttons, starting from Windows Vista, and uses a different function to create the buttons resulting in different transparency behaviour.
Windows Media Center
The Windows 7 reference in the about page of Windows Media Center has been replaced with "Windows 8 Beta".

The slider used to change the accent color in the Personalization page has been changed to a simple black bar.

The spinning dot animation seen when the user is logging onto the system has increased in size.
