Windows 8 build 8039 is a build of Windows 8, which was released to Microsoft partners through the Ecosystem Engineering Access Program (EEAP) around July 2011. The release notes for the x86 compile of this build were shared on BetaArchive on 16 August 2011 after being discovered in a pastebin^[1], while its AMD64 compile was publicly shared on 6 November 2024. Prior to its publication, a screenshot of this build was shared four days earlier.

Unlike all later fbl_eeap builds, this build didn't have the entire Metro user interface stripped out at compile time and therefore can be redpilled.

Release notes

IntelDistrib would like to announce the immediate availability of Windows 8 x86 Client Build 8039 for testing at Intel.

NOTE: There are two changes to the EEAP builds starting with this EEAP that you should be aware of:

    1: All OS installations using these builds will now require the unique key for the Windows Developer Preview
        · Installation with previous generic keys will no longer be supported
        · PRODKEY.TXT files containing generic keys will no longer be included in the build package
        · You will have to get the New Product Key provided on the product site. This is a special key as part of the partnership Intel has with Microsoft.
    2: The name of the EEAP builds in this package contain "FBL_EEAP" instead of "WINMAIN"
        · This change is a name change only, and will not affect your ability to download or use these builds in your testing

According to the notes, all x86 winmain builds compiled shortly before this build had the entire Metro shell stripped out at the time of compilation. This is evident by the x86 and x64 compiles of build 8020 (winmain.110602-1840) not containing anything related to Redpill.

New features and changes

Recovery

When booting into an option, text is displayed underneath the spinner to indicate that the system is booting into a recovery option.
This build introduces an early version of the "Recovery" screen.

Bugs and quirks

Upgrade

After the preparation phase of the upgrade, Windows may encounter a bugcheck with the error code SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED caused by winhv.sys. To bypass this, boot into Safe Mode and delete or rename the file located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.
