Windows 8 build 7746 is the earliest available Milestone 1 build of Windows 8. It was uploaded on 3 May 2020, along with screenshots of several other builds. Prior to it being shared, it was released to graphics device manufacturers. Being very early in development, many areas still include the Windows 7 branding and the operating system still uses the version number of 6.1. There are no significant changes from its predecessor, apart from the inclusion of several minor bugs.
New features and changes
Network boot debugging
This is the earliest available build to support boot debugging over a network. Drivers are included for Realtek RTL8139 and Intel PRO/1000 network cards. As this is an early iteration of network kernel/boot debugging, it does not implement the encryption key system used in the final iteration of KDNET and hence WinDbg with default network debugging settings (which assumes a key) cannot connect to this build's debugging facility.
Miscellaneous
- This is the first available build with Harmony (the Windows 7 RTM wallpaper) set as the default wallpaper. This change was first observed in build 7731.
- The "Send feedback" shortcut returns to the desktop with similar functionality first observed in Windows 7 build 7000 (albeit with a broken UI) with the inclusion of logging into Product Studio.
- The preliminary version of Internet Explorer 9 no longer crashes on most websites compared to build 7700. However, its rendering capabilities remain mostly unchanged.
- Several kernel exports have been added.
- The pinned Internet Explorer icon in the taskbar has a slightly different texture and shadow along with the Windows Media Player icon being darker.

Some included applications do not launch.
Installation
To install or run this build in VMware Workstation, the hardware compatibility version must be set to versions 8.x/9.x or a PHASE0_EXCEPTION bugcheck will occur when attempting to load the disc image.
