Internet Explorer 5 是 Internet Explorer 的第五个版本，于 1999 年发布，（与 Windows 桌面更新一起）随 Windows 98 第二版和 Windows 2000 一起提供。它还可用于 Windows 3.1x、Windows NT 3.51、Windows NT 4.0、Windows 95 和 Windows 98。Windows NT 3.51 的用户可以安装和使用版本 5.00.0913.2206。它是专为 Windows 3.1x 和 Windows NT 3.51 设计的 Internet Explorer 的最后一个 16 位版本；后续版本需要 Windows 95 和 Windows NT 4.0 或更高版本。
最初计划于 1998 年 7 月发布，但由于与 2000 年问题相关的问题，它被推迟到 1999 年 3 月。它与 Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 一起发布。
通过使用 MainWin 的 xDe 环境并使用 Trident 引擎，将 IE 5 的一个版本移植到 Solaris 和 HP-UX 上。IE for Mac OS 使用名为 Tasman 的不同引擎，该引擎也用于 Office for Mac、Entourage 和 MSN for Mac OS X。在 Mac OS X Jaguar 之前，它是默认浏览器，在 Mac OS X Tiger 之前作为可选组件包含在内。
Windows 2000 包括 Internet Explorer 5.01。但是，它仍将自己标识为 5.00。与 5.00 的不同之处在于关于框中使用的图像并删除了 Microsoft Wallet。
Internet Explorer 5.0 和 5.01 也分别作为可选组件包含在 Office 2000 中，并作为安装前的要求包含在 Office XP 中。
