Windows Vista Build 5744 是 Windows Vista 的官方 Release Candidate 2，于 2006 年 10 月 6 日发布。[1]官方下载网站在达到 200 000 次下载的目标后于 4 天后关闭。[2]
与之前的 Release Candidate 形成鲜明对比的是，Release Candidate 2 的专用分支并不存在，因为此版本源自内部 RTM 发布分支，旨在供员工自托管。特别是选择这个版本的决定是在最后的尝试中做出的，以便将更多供应商引入 Vista，因为独立硬件和软件供应商（IHV/ISV）不愿意开发针对 Vista 的新软件和驱动程序模型的应用程序和硬件，原因是人们对 Microsoft 及时交付操作系统的能力产生了怀疑。[3]这些因素受到 2002 年至 2004 年期间缺乏驱动程序开发工具包的强烈影响，[a]开发重置、多次延迟以及 Microsoft 对 Vista Capable 程序的不当处理，此程序将最低系统硬件要求门槛设定得太低，以至于任何基于 Windows XP 的系统都无法可靠地运行新的操作系统。[4]

- 安装程序自动运行和类似的图标现在更改为较浅的蓝色阴影，现在类似于最终版本中的图标。
- Windows 体验指数检查在 OOBE 之后已略微最终确定。
声音
- 如果电脑正在登录或关机，登录和注销声音（Windows XP 默认的开启和关闭声音以及未使用的登录和注销声音）将分别用于登录和注销事件，并将 Vista RC 替代登录声音替换为登录事件，将 Vista RC 关机声音替换为注销事件。
