Windows 8 build 7904 (winmain) is a build of Windows 8, which was shared on 3 November 2024 in both the x86 and AMD64 architectures in both the Free (Retail) and Checked (Debug) variants, along with its public symbol MSIs and its checked server counterpart.

This build utilizes a valid SHA-1 production-signing certificate (signed by the Microsoft Windows Verification PCA certificate chain, associated with Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL)) and can be booted and installed on the current date.

Bugs and quirks

EFI support

The x64 compile's Preinstallation Environment softlocks on a black screen with a classic mouse cursor on UEFI hardware, meaning that Setup and the Recovery Environment cannot be used on such hardware. This can also be observed in build 7899.

Setup

  • The last word of status messages shown when starting Setup and before the computer reboots into OOBE is cut off.

Shell

  • Enabling EnableAccent causes rendering issues.
  • The Start screen may be unresponsive for a minute after login.
  • The Desktop tile will show the Windows 7 default wallpaper after first logging in.

Themes

  • The title bar and watermark uses the Arial font due to a typo in the aero.msstyles and aerolite.msstyles files.
  • Only the top portion of the window frame is blurred when using the Windows Aero theme, leaving the side borders transparent.
  • The Windows Basic and the High Contrast themes do not render properly due to the enforcement of the DWM Aero theme.
