Windows 8 build 8028 is a pre-Developer Preview/Milestone 3 build of Windows 8, which was shared on 29 October 2024, along with its server counterpart and its language packs in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese (Taiwan), Korean, Japanese and German.

Bugs and quirks

Localization

  • The Start screen tiles are not translated in the German language pack.
  • Some parts of the OS such as boot screen and winver use pseudo-localized strings.
  • The Korean language pack is partially corrupt and therefore cannot be installed on the x86 version. However it is still possible to use it by manually copying the MUI files and registering the language pack by adding an entry to the registry.

Microsoft Confidential in winver

The Microsoft Confidential disclaimer text in winver is colored black instead of the red that is seen in other builds.

Upgrade

After the preparation phase of the upgrade, Windows may encounter a bugcheck with the error code SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED caused by winhv.sys. To bypass this, boot into Safe Mode and delete or rename the file located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers.

Miscellaneous

  • Some dialogs such as the run dialog doesn't show the label captions background properly, and shows the ButtonFace or plain white solid background color.
  • The Microsoft Confidential watermark is placed higher even though the timebomb isn't triggered yet.

Redpill

Using the checked compile and redpilling it, would result in login screen flashing, making it impossible to log in. And when clicking on any surface many times, this will happen:
