记事本是 [[Microsoft Windows 通述|Microsoft Windows]] 的默认文本编辑器。自从此应用程序在 [[Windows 1.0]] 中首次亮相以来，它已成为 Windows 附件的一部分。

== 历史 ==
已知最早的记事本版本可能出现在 [[Windows 1.0 Personal Computer News 1983 年 12 月 1 日内部版本|Windows 1.0 ''Personal Computer News'' 1983 年 12 月 1 日内部版本]]中，当时简称为“Text”。它具有更复杂的用户界面，在最大化时有两行菜单选项，并且根据“格式”菜单项，Text 程序也可能是书写器（Write）的早期版本，或者此时这两个程序可能只是一个。

[[Windows 1.0 1984 年 2 月 22 日内部版本|1984 年 2 月 22 日内部版本]]从 Text 程序中删除了菜单，简化了程序。

到 [[Windows 1.0 Development Release 5|DR5]] 版本，此程序已重命名为 Notepad，同时添加了其文件（File）和编辑（Edit）菜单。但是，此时应用程序的标题栏只显示编辑后的文件名，或者如果用户正在编辑全新的文件，则显示“(untitled)”（未命名）。[[Windows 1.0 Beta Release|Beta Release]] 对此进行了更改，现在在文件名前显示“Notepad - ”。

Beta 版还为记事本添加了新的搜索功能，使其菜单现在类似于最终版本。

=== Windows 1.0 和 2.0 ===
随着 [[Windows 1.0]] 的发布，记事本获得了一个图标，这是 [[Windows 1.0 Premiere Edition|Premiere Edition]] 中没有的。

=== Windows 3.x ===
[[Windows 3.0 build 33]] moves the Help option out onto the main window. [[Windows 3.0 build 55|Build 55]] included a new icon for Notepad, as well as adding a "Characters in File" field in the About dialog.

[[Windows 3.1x]] introduced a new about dialog in <code>SHELL.DLL</code>, that replaced the older about dialogs and unified all programs' about dialogs.

=== Windows NT 3.x ===
[[Windows NT 3.1]] introduces a 32-bit version port of Notepad.

=== Windows 9x ===
[[Windows 95 build 73f]] makes the Notepad icon grayscale, which would be reverted by the [[Windows 95 build 950 r-6|RTM build]]. It also introduces a new 32-bit version of Notepad, which was ported into [[Windows NT 4.0|NT 4.0]] as well.

[[Windows 98]] introduces font changing ability.

=== Windows 2000 ===
[[Windows 2000]] added into Notepad support for more text encodings.

=== Windows XP ===
[[Windows XP]] added into Notepad a status bar, which indicate text cursor's current location and turns on by disabling Word Wrapping. Also XP changed program icon to fit its new [[Luna]] visual style. The default font has also been changed from System to Lucida Console.

=== Windows Vista ===
[[Windows Vista]] changed Notepad's icon to fit its new [[Windows Aero|Aero]] visual style and fixed bug which prevented document modification in case of non proper Unicode characters. Internally, status bar show separated from word wrapping was shown but didn't integrated.

=== Windows 10 ===
The [[Windows 10 October 2018 Update]] included the first updates to Notepad since Windows Vista, which added Bing search integration, zoom functionality, and the {{Key press|Ctrl|← Backspace}} keyboard shortcut (which deletes the previous word). By time, Windows 10's Notepad gained ability to show zooming percentage and document encoding in status bar, with support of Unix format, UTF-16 (with LE/BE too) and UTF-8 BOM encodings.

[[Windows 10 May 2019 Update|May 2019 Update]] [[Windows 10 build 18298|build 18298]] added an asterisk (*) to title bar to show whether changes to the document had been saved or not:
*When an asterisk is shown, the changes have not been saved yet. 
*When changes are saved, it goes away.
[[Cobalt]] [[Windows 10 build 21337.1000|build 21337]] and later would come with the [[Microsoft Store]] version of Notepad pre-installed, which moved it out of the "Windows Accessories" folder and into the main app list in [[Start menu|Start]].

=== Windows 11 ===
Around the time [[Windows 11]] was officially released, Microsoft had teased a visual refresh for Notepad, adding a banner for availability of Notepad's newer version. It would later be released to [[Windows Insider Program|Windows Insiders]] on the Dev Channel on 7 December 2021, followed by a public release on 16 February 2022. Notable changes to new version of Notepad include:
* An XAML-based user interface, which aligns with the Fluent design language of Windows 11,
* Support for dark mode,
* Redesigned find and replace interface,
* New Settings page for changing themes and fonts,
* Support for files up to 1 GB in size,
* A new, refreshed Notepad icon.
On 19 January 2023, Microsoft began rolling out an update to Windows Insiders which added tab support to the application. It would officially be released on 28 February 2023, alongside the Moment 2 update of [[Windows 11 2022 Update]].

== Trivia ==
An app with a nearly identical name is included in early versions of [[macOS]]. However, it is more similar to [[Sticky Notes]].
