== 历史 ==
在引入“开始”菜单之前，[[程序管理器]]使用 MDI 窗口提供类似的功能。[[Windows 3.1]] 窗口管理的特殊性意味着程序管理器窗口经常会丢失在其他窗口后面，需要用户最小化多个窗口才能启动应用程序。该程序本身也受到其相当复杂的界面的影响，一些常见任务（例如退出 Windows）隐藏在名称令人困惑的菜单中。

Microsoft 旨在通过一个新的桌面隐喻用户界面来解决这个问题，此用户界面最初计划在 [[Microsoft Codename Cairo|Cairo]] 进行，后来移植到 [[Windows 95|Chicago]]。1993 年测试的初始设计包括一个带有 System（系统）、Find（查找）和 Help（帮助）按钮的托盘；每个 Menu（菜单）都公开了基本操作系统功能的一部分。可以通过浏览桌面上的“程序”目录来启动应用程序，这类似于 [[Windows 3.1]] 体验。在接下来的几个月里，此设计进一步发展，产生了一个菜单，此菜单将三个菜单和程序文件夹组合成一个界面，此界面可通过使用任务栏上的“开始”按钮进行访问。

在 [[Windows 95]] 中引入的经典“开始”菜单是一个单列菜单，其中包含电源选项，以及帮助、设置、文档和已安装应用程序的快捷方式。还可以通过在 Start Menu 目录中创建快捷方式来在菜单顶部添加自定义项目。默认情况下，主菜单使用 32×32 图标，并在左侧显示操作系统品牌横幅。但是，它也可以切换到小图标模式，此模式使用 16×16 图标且不显示任何横幅。

尽管在 [[Windows XP]] 中引入了新的“开始”菜单设计，但经典的“开始”菜单仍作为一个选项保留到 [[Windows Vista]]。

=== “开始”面板 ===
“开始”菜单在 [[Windows XP]] 中进行了重新设计，使用双列设计，最初称为“开始”面板。左窗格包括指向用户经常使用和固定的程序的链接，以及计算机的默认 Internet 和电子邮件程序的快捷方式。其他程序可以通过菜单底部的“所有程序”选项访问。右侧窗格包含指向用户文件夹、最近使用的文档以及网络位置和设置的快速链接。此菜单还包括一个指向帐户设置和电源选项的链接。
