Android 是由 Google 推出的基于 Linux 开发的操作系统，针对智能、便携式和/或嵌入式设备，如手机、平板电脑、智能手表、电视、汽车和其他嵌入式设备。Android 操作系统得名自其最初开发此操作系统的公司，最开始 Android 是由一家名为 Android Inc. 的公司开发。后来，2005 年 7 月，Google 收购 Android Inc.，之后于 2007 年 11 月提供了 Android SDK 供开发者使用。一年后的 2008 年 9 月，Android 的首个版本发布。
从 Android 1.5 到 10，每一个 Android 主要版本都有一个基于不同甜点的名称，这些名称按照字母顺序排列。此命名方式在 Android 10 以后的版本中暂停使用，改为在官方宣传时使用版本号，原本的甜点名称在此期间只作为内部代号使用，直至 Android 12L。从 Android 13 开发者预览版开始，恢复了原来的命名方式。
Android 在国内也是使用最为广泛的操作系统，在国内也有许多基于 Android 开发的各类定制版本，尽管它们都自称是操作系统。
2020 年 1 月，Microsoft 发布了属于他们的首个 Android 体验预览版（内部版本 2020.117.2），旨在 Surface Duo 上运行。
名称来源
Android 一词本意指“机器人”。Android 一词最早出现于法国作家利尔亚当（Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam）在 1886 年发表的科幻小说《未来的夏娃》（L'ève future）中。他将外表像人的机器起名为 Android。Android Inc. 和 Android 操作系统均从此得名。
Logo
Android 的 Logo 是由 Ascender 公司设计的，诞生于 2010 年，其设计灵感源于男女厕所门上的图形符号，于是布洛克绘制了一个简单的机器人，它的躯干就像锡罐的形状，头上还有两根天线，Android 小机器人便诞生了。其中的文字使用了 Ascender 公司专门制作的称之为“Droid ”的字体。Android 是一个全身绿色的机器人，绿色也是 Android 的标志。颜色采用了 PMS 376C 和 RGB 中十六进制的#A4C639来绘制，这是 Android 操作系统的品牌象征。有时候，它们还会使用纯文字的 Logo。

Android 的版本代号以甜点命名，类似于 Ubuntu 的代号以动物命名的方式。
